Shopping Nirvana/Happy Birthday Lizzy

Nothing will deter us from going to Park City (shopping mecca) for Liz's Birthday. She repeated this over and over again as we braved a pretty wicked snow storm to drive up for our annual shopping spree. The nasty storm managed to bracket our trip, snowing heavily on the way up, letting up while we were there, then picking up again for the drive home. With the exception of the year Aaliyah was born, we have made this shopping trip every year since Liz was 17. We have gone shopping for her birthday every year since she was 15. Reason being she loves clothes but is waaaay too picky for us to buy anything for her. It is much easier to give her money and let her pick out her things. It's sort of a party for everyone involved, we all shop, we all buy fun stuff, it is fabulous! My camera is out of batteries so I can't show all the fabulosity that I came home with, but I did a good job picking out some really nice wardrobe pieces and saving a ton of money.
Happy Happy Birthday to Lizzy! I love you tons and hope your quarter of a century celebration was as great for you as it was for me. You are an amazing daughter and I am so proud to be your Mom!

Why do I do this to myself EVERY year?

Every January I have great and grand plans of preparing all year long for next Christmas. I think I will be able to make a few gifts every month, start on Christmas jammies, do any number of preparations. During canning season I also think "this would be a great time to bottle some really creative neighbor gifts". Starting in October I feel the pressure to actually do something. The story repeats itself year after year, I am left to do all my Christmas sewing, newsletter, neighbor gifts, yada yada yada the week before Christmas. I am guessing I cannot be taught new habits and this scenario will play itself out over and over again. I wish I was one of those get it done early people, but I am sadly one of those rush around like crazy and not get it all done people. I can't find a decent picture of all my family to send out, I think all our newsletters sound the same, I haven't made any jammies. Worst of all, I don't understand why I do this every year. I may be pathetic...

Raising MaryAnn

A careless child tried to throw a hoodie over the half wall in my living room. The hoodie fell short, making a huge mess. It knocked a large houseplant over the edge and down the stairs (dirt everywhere). It also pushed a glass plaque over on the piano, the glass plaque pushed over all the pictures and decorations on the piano. Who was this careless child and what should I do to punish her? Of course it is me. I was folding laundry and came across a dirty hoodie, so rather than get up and carry it down the stairs, I tried to throw it from across the room. The sad part of raising me, is that I knew I couldn't throw it that far. As soon as it left my hands I knew I had made a big mistake. I griped and grumbled at myself while cleaning up my giant mess. I even tried to comfort myself to keep me from getting too sad. I kept saying things to myself like "it's ok, you needed to clean that plant up and take care of the dead leaves anyway". I don't really recommend throwing a plant down the stairs to remove its dead leaves. So, what should I do with myself? I'm thinking no dessert, and possibly grounded tomorrow. Since I have no backbone as a parent, I will probably give in, have 2 desserts and play all day tomorrow. This is why I never learn my lesson.

Must Whine

So, I have had a tummy ache for 3 days now. I have been watching what I eat pretty closely. Bottom line is, I think I can't eat anything. I am almost sure that water is OK, but everything else is out. I know man cannot live by bread alone, but can woman live by water alone? I am so tired of reading labels and checking my "corn free" list. OK, whining over.

The key to happiness

I keep thinking my sad excuse for not blogging is a severe lack of time. The even sadder excuse is that I have nothing to blog about. I didn't want to sit and blog about how stressed out I am (been there, done that), or how little time I have (pretty sure I've told that story too). I keep wanting to start a craft blog, but I clearly don't have time to blog in general let alone try and blog about crafty stuff. So here I sit with not much to blog about.
I am feeling like a reasonably good mother these days. I made Becka 2 new outfits to wear to her conference hooey. I helped Courtney make a crown that looks like King Tut's head piece. I spent some quality time with Scott and Ryan because Brian took the little girls off for an adventure. I hope I help Lizzy, I feel like we talk lots, and we went on a great walk the other night. I tried to help Alex with her math tonight but I fear she is perilously close to being smarter than me.
For the first time in...forever...I have a pretty nice week ahead. As I think about it, there is lots going on, just nothing I have to worry or feel guilty about. This is a big deal because I feel guilty or worried about pretty much everything. I did realize late today that I had inadvertently skipped a week. I was thinking this was the week before Halloween (I'm pretty sure it's not). Thinking about it, that is probably why I am so optimistic about my upcoming week. It's an extra week! A gift of a whole week. Wahoo!
I may have just stumbled across the key to happiness!

Maneuver Fail

My morning was pretty much a fail no matter how you look at it. I had too many things to do and too little time to do them in. I thought if everything went like clock work I could accomplish all I needed to and declare myself successful. Now I am declaring my morning a fail, on so many levels.
My brilliant plan involved making a tasty pot of 5-bean chili, taking some to book group and then having dinner all ready in advance. I took too long getting ready, but still thought I could get the chili on before visiting teaching and my council PTA meeting. It all started to go wrong from there, I couldn't find ANY of the ingredients for chili. I started texting Brian and was able to find most of the ingredients. Then, looking at the clock I decided to multitask and brush my teeth whilst looking for the seasoning packets. It could be called the epic multitask fail. I had a mouth full of toothpaste, lost my shoe while stepping over stuff, and non so gracefully tumbled to the ground (basement, cement floor, no padding between the industrial carpet and the floor). I laid there assessing whether or not anything was broken (jury's still out on that one) and unable to cry out for help due to the mouth full of toothpaste.
So to sum up, unseasoned pot of chili that won't be ready by noon, supposed to be visiting teaching right then, meeting that I have no paperwork ready for, book group that I have no potluck ready for, pathetic me. I burst into tears, mostly from insult, not injury. Scott gave me a hug and I walked out the door. Sadly, I had not been able to compose myself and boobed like a baby to Michelle (my VT companion) and through most of the first visit.
Visiting teaching was nice, I missed my meeting because I went to the wrong school (West Point, West Clinton...aargh), and brought popcorn chicken and tater babies to book group. Book group was great though, and we will be reading The Princess Bride for anyone who is interested in coming next month.
On the bright side, I didn't break my hip
Lame me, multitask fail...maneuver fail...fail fail.

Biz...or Lecka

Just a quick blurb because I thought this was cute. Last night Courtney came out to tell me that she had found a pair of shoes she liked on the internet, the conversation went a little like this:
Me: what kind of shoes? We just bought you 3 new pairs, I thought you were good to go.
Court: No, I NEED these shoes, I will start saving up for them.
Me: What kind of shoes?
Court: There are actually 2 pairs, a pair of hiking shoes and a pair of hiking sandals.
Me: Do you want to be Becka when you grow up?
(moment of deep thought)
Court: Becka and Liz...Biz...or Lecka!

So, Biz and Lecka, thanks for being the great daughters that you are. I am glad that Courtney wants to be both or either one of you. I cannot think of better examples!

Join our book group!

I'm starting up a book group and would love it if any of you would like to come. For our first book (it was hard for me to pick one, but after this first one, anyone can pick the next) we are reading "Fablehaven" by Brandon Mull. My kids have all recommended it, Scott read the whole series and loved them.
I am also experimenting a little with when we meet. Evenings seem to be at a premium, so we will be meeting for lunch. Friday, Sept. 18 at 11:30 will be our first meeting. Bring a potluck lunch item, and any preschoolers you have are welcome too. We will be meeting at Monica's house, if you need the address, call me.
Come one, come all. Bring book ideas for the coming months, and also a catchy name for our new group.
I'm sooooo excited I can hardly stand it. If you want to participate online if you can't come in person, read the book and send me your comments, I'll include them in our discussion.

Snarky

So, blogging when I am feeling Snarky probably isn't the bestest idea but I'll post now, regret later. I found out last week that the person who VOLUNTEERED to be PTA president-elect, isn't going to do it. She didn't say one word to me...all summer...after all the times I've left messages...I hear this second hand...when exactly is she going to call me? That put me in a pretty crappy mood because no one wants this sucky job, I'm the only one who ever says yes to it. I won't have a student at the elementary school next year, so maybe I'll just finish my year out and leave them hanging. Then, I finally found someone to be health and safety commissioner and I just got an email from her saying she has thought more about it and can't do it. I think we'll just do the things people are willing to do, and everything else just won't happen. I feel so much like quitting right now. Really, are all our kids going to start taking drugs because we don't have red ribbon week? Are they all going to get hit by cars because we don't have walk to school with your child day and then give them a doughnut?
I suppose I'm being a pessimist and only looking at the bad things and not all the people who are willing to help. Pessimism isn't in my nature, but I'm having a hard time seeing the bright side today. I have a PTA meeting tomorrow, we'll see how well I'm handling things by then. I tend to be a little on the "bite me" side of things when I'm feeling like this. Let's hope I am happier tomorrow.

A visit to Grandpa's house

My summer flew by so fast I haven't had time to take the family down to see my Dad until last Sunday. It's hard to find a time when we all can go. Neil was on call and Becka was at work, so the rest of us headed out. It also takes 3 cars to get us all there, but so worth the effort. I'm worried that my Dad is having trouble eating and apparently the Dr's have told him he is too old to fix the problem. It was a very nice visit though, and we hope to make it down one more time before they head south for the winter.

Pioneer Day

We had a quiet Pioneer day this year. Pretty much just stayed around the house. Brian went in to Ogden to get us the most giant pizza ever at the Pie Pizzeria, so yummy...very yummy. When it got dark we decided we had better go out and use what meager fireworks we had. It was fun. Oh, Brian also found a box of glow sticks we had bought for the 4th of July but forgot about, I think the kids were more excited about that than anything else.

Under the Sea

Maybe not Under the Sea, more like under the water in the backyard pool--but fun no matter how you look at it! I heart my new camera, not only can you take pictures under water, but you can drop it. The only gripe I have is that I have dropped most of the cameras I have had that aren't drop proof, but have yet to drop the camera that can handle said droppage.

4th of July Shenanigans

We went to Clearfield (Fisher) park for the 4th of July, and it was fantastic! We had a great picnic, played games, generally chilled, and had front row seats to the fireworks. All around good times. I love the thrill of sitting right underneath the fireworks as they explode. We made a wiser choice parking this year, and were out and home as soon as the fireworks ended. Last year we parked too close and had to sit in traffic forever. Perfection.

Alex and Court learn to sew!

Alex and Courtney have both asked for sewing lessons from me. I was excited for them to finish their first projects. Courtney chose to make a tote bag and did a super job. She did all the stitching and turning, all I did was attach the buttons and flowers because the tote was already stitched and lined and it would be really hard to attach buttons without catching the lining.
Alex was a bit of a fashion designer. I was working on my quilt and she pulled out a piece of polka dot fabric and was telling me she thought she could just cut out and make a skirt without a pattern. I stopped what I was doing and helped her choose a pattern she liked and then she scrounged around and found some contrast fabric to make the ruffle. She also did all the sewing herself, including a narrow rolled hem.
I see talent!

AAAHHHH, forgot my May book report!

Oh no, now I have to try and think what I read a month ago...I can barely remember what I read this morning. It is almost July and I realized I forgot my May report. I read "Living Dead in Dallas", I think it is by Charlaine Harris or something like that. Considering the buzz HBO is getting for the series based on the books (True Blood), I had hoped it would be better. I thought it was generally lazy writing. She didn't develop her characters enough for me, maybe she thought readers would be fascinated by vampires and not care about anything else. Here's a thought, maybe I should stop reading books about vampires because I will always be disappointed. It's been years since I read Ann Rice's vampire books, but I think I liked them.
It was generally a disappointing reading month for me (sorry), I read Gregory Maguire's "A Lion Among Men", the third book in his Wicked trilogy. I found none of the characters including the cowardly lion, to be at all appealing. I pretty much just drudged though this depressing tale to get to the end. I have enjoyed other books by this author much more than this one.
Oh, a surprise good read for me was "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. Scott recommended it and it was a thought provoking tale. For those of you like me who had never heard of this book, it is a fairy tale written during world war 2. The story of the animals taking over the farm in order to have a better life and the ensuing hardships they faced was to be compared to what happened to the citizens of Russia. It does have modern day comparisons and is a great read. It doesn't have a happy ending at all, but it can't all be happy endings.
I am not sure I read anything else, I continue to fall behind but refuse to give up, I'll have to toss in a couple light reads and catch up. If I think of anything else I read, I'll toss in into June's report.
I'm currently taking a delightful tour of Europe in Bill Bryson's "Neither here nor there". I'll report when I'm done.

Happy Birthday Baby!

It is odd to think that my baby is 11, time just seems to fly by! We had a "family" birthday this year. Brian took Alex and Courtney to build a bear (where she magically found an outfit that looked just like her birthday outfit), we gave her a nice keyboard, and we had a bar-b-que dinner. Good times!

Congratulations Ryan!

Oh the stress of getting him to this point...but he did it...yeah!

My Favorite Antiques

I have amassed a small collection of Antiques over the years. Since I have my snazzy new camera I thought I'd include some pictures of my favorites:
I love my collection of depression glass, it includes these plates and cups, and a rather large selection of blue canning jars.

Coffee grinder and thanks to Audrey, accompanying coffee jar

One of my favorites, our Fisher Beer crate

The lantern from Brian's Grandpa

Cool little noise maker

Of course I have to include my favorite antique...Brian! Happy 49th Birthday!

Grandma and Aaliyah day

Tyler was very sick today and Liz needed to take him to the Doctor. As sad as I was that Tyler was sick, I was very happy that Aaliyah and I got some time to just hang out and have fun. Poor Tyler spent hours at the Dr. (and poor lizzy too). Tyler is feeling much better, and thankfully didn't have to stay in the hospital. So yeah for Tyler feeling better, and super yeah for precious time spent with Aaliyah!

She can stare you down when she wants, but she has the best smile ever

I love it when she makes this face!

Okay I'm a spaz and forgot to rotate this one, tilt your head to the side

Stuff I read in April

I got a little busy and fell a little behind on my goal for April. I should be able to make up for it this month. May is super busy but I am not working as much, so I want to read more.
I read "The Appeal" by John Grisham. I don't always need a flowery happy ending, but I don't want to read a whole book only to get to the end and find out that life always sucks and won't get any better. I wouldn't recommend this one (especially since I probably just ruined the end for you). I just really didn't like this book and its message at all.
I read "confessions of a shopaholic" and other than its slightly PG 13 rating for some bad language that you just couldn't see coming, I really enjoyed this book. I totally understood the main character and her convoluted logic. It also made me feel much better about my closet full of clothes and shoes. I would definitely recommend it, and you can borrow it because I bought it.
I read "Bridge to Terabithia". My main gripe with this book (other than another sucky ending)is that I read it out loud with students, and even though they are biblical swear words, it has a healthy smattering of cussing. The main character also says "lord" a lot, and although iffy as taking the name of the Lord in vain, just uncomfortable for the kids to say. I started editing out the bad words as I read and the kids picked up on that and did the same.
I'm working on several books right now and should be caught up soon.

I'm a loser

Yes it's true. I lose everything! So why blog about it? Well, I've hit a new all time low and that is saying a lot. I've lost an expensive camera, 2 diamonds, most of my kids at one point or another, so what have I lost now? I have been looking for the lid to my crock pot for 3 days now. It's not like I was using it in another room, or left it in the car. It's not in the depths of my purse, or in the disaster that is my craft room. Where exactly does one lose a rather large lid that doesn't fit anything but the crock pot? I mostly lose things around the house because I think of some genius organizing solution and put stuff in places I can't remember. This is the lid to my crock pot though, I keep it with my crock pot.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Congratulations Courtney!

I haven't blogged in awhile because I haven't had the computer that has all the pictures on it...still don't. What's the fun of blogging if you can't add a cute picture or two? I hope to have our computer with the pictures up and running soon, and NO, I can't figure out how to get pictures from our camera to THIS computer.
I do owe Court a big congratulations though, she was sooooo excited when she came home from school yesterday because (insert drum roll here) she is the fastest typer in the fifth grade! OK, maybe it's not THE most exciting news, but she was super hyped about it and I am super proud of her! She kept going on and on about how someone else is always the fastest, but he had too many errors and she was the fastest. Very exciting stuff in the life of a 10 year old. She got a giant candy bar and a big hug from me (hmmm, I wonder which one she appreciated more...)
As soon as I get the other computer back I'll put pics of my new tattoo on!

A must read and a couple of pretty goods

For anyone keeping track, I have now read 12 out of my 50 book goal. I have a bag next to my bed with 12 more books in it...call it my "queue". I am enjoying the reading but I must admit it is feeding into a bad habit of mine, buying books. I know I should check them out from the library, but I can't seem to help myself (naughty me). So far I have read spiderwick chronicles one and two, shipwreck at the bottom of the world, a series of unfortunate events (3), Plum lucky, Scarpetta, The Giver, Flush, and for this last month I finished:
Double Fudge by Judy Blume- I admit I wouldn't be drawn to this one, I read it because the reading group of 5th graders chose it. Books like Flush, and A series of unfortunate events although written for a younger crowd were very enjoyable. Maybe the Fudge books are written for a crowd too young for me to relate to. It wasn't bad, but I'm not lining up the rest of the Fudge books to read later.
Plum Lovin by Janet Evanovich- same review as Plum Lucky-good, not stellar, could have just waited for a numbers book. Funny, light read.
Bear Stone by Will Hobbs-I read this at school and then got to go with the sixth graders to hear the author speak. The book was great, the author really inspired me to actually get serious about my writing.
The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. Someone must read this book and discuss with me. I love the author's writing style. The storyline was so compelling I could hardly put the book down. READ THIS! I heard they made a movie from the book, but I'm not sure I want to see it. I almost always hate movies I see once I've read the book.
So that's it for now, 12 down, 38 to go!

Murder and Mutiny

I spend a lot of time contemplating life and death at this time of year. In 1992, Brian's parents were murdered at the end of March, and then in 1999 my Mom died at the end of March. They were all buried on April Fool's day...not a funny trick in my book. I really miss all of them, but mostly I'm sad that some of my children never got a chance to know 3 of their grandparents.
Because Brian's parents were compassionate caring people and not members of the local gang, being murdered was completely incongruous with the way they lived. They were killed by a young man whom they had befriended and treated with kindness since he was a boy. During the trial process one of the prosecuting attorneys explained to me that motive really isn't a factor to consider in convicting someone. So that whole "means, motive, and opportunity" is really just nonsense. I mention this because so many times family of murder victims say something to the effect of "I just want to know why?". There really is no why. There is no compelling reason for murder. I really don't want to understand what runs through the mind of Lanny Smith. He had a dark desire to take their lives and acted on it, and that is the beginning and the end of his motive.
This experience gave me a greater understanding of the importance of forgiveness. I can say I truly forgive Lanny for what he did because I rarely give him a thought. I think often of the quirky and wonderful people Warren and Yvonne Downard were, and the incredible legacy they have left behind. I rarely if ever think of how they died, or the man that killed them. I trust God with all my heart. This trust lets me know that no matter what excuses Lanny and his family may come up with, no matter their reprehensible actions during the trial and after, God has it covered.
So what has mutiny got to do with anything? Well, the very definition of mutiny is "open rebellion against constituted authority", and I can think of no better definition of what my mother's body did to her than "mutiny". When I was very young (probably 7 or 8), my mother became increasingly crippled by Rheumatoid Arthritis. You should be the boss (constituted authority) of your own body, but RA causes your body to defy you with increasing debilitation. After 30 or so years of suffering, my mother finally lost the battle but I know she eventually won the war. My mother taught us all a great deal through her struggles. Most of all, what I learned from her is, "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit". By this I mean that she accepted the limitations of her disease, but never gave up finding new ways to be productive and serve others. I feel bad that as a child and teenager I resented not having a mother who could move around and do things for me. Now I know that I gained a lot of independence and learned to do things for myself.
So, to my children, this is what I hope you know of your grandparents (among many other things)
Grandpa Downard: always worked hard, and passed this work ethic on to your dad, never threw anything away (including old moldy applesauce), could fix anything (another trait your dad inherited), Was quiet, and mumbled. One of my favorite funny grandpa-isms is that he used to change his clothes like 5 times a day--no kidding! He would get up and get dressed, then put on old plaid polyester pants to work around the house, then change his clothes because he needed to go to the store, then put back on his "work" clothes, the cycle continued on and on. He could fall asleep anywhere and sleep through anything. He couldn't go to bed until he had gotten up several times to check locks and make sure the house was safe.
Grandma Downard: LOVED to talk. She was the ultimate "visitor", she could carry on long conversations with total strangers. She ate oleo and sat on the davenport. She couldn't say Nevada, or Jalepeno. Grandma was very compassionate and loving. She was especially kind to me. When she found out that I liked ham a lot, every time we went to visit she would make ham. She was eternally patient and lived in surroundings that were difficult for her in order to do what was best for her family. Very bad driver.
Grandma Fisher: I think she had arthritis of the taste buds, she would eat anything. There is a chance she was part rabbit, she would literally start drooling at the sight of a field of alfalfa. She used to eat home made carrot and celery juice every day. She was a homeopathic health nut. I NEVER told her that I didn't feel good, I guarantee the cure was always worse than the disease. Here's a hint: everything in your body is linked to your colon, she owned an enema bag and she knew how to use it! She was known to give us castor oil, straight acidofulus (think little cup of curdled milk), grossness of all manner. She never complained. If she did actually say that she didn't feel good, she was on death's doorstep. She loved to read recipes. She always had tissues in her pockets and a dixie cup by her (won't go in to what it was for).
Of all your grandparents who have passed away be sure of this, they all had strong testimonies of the gospel and truly endured to the end.

I'm grouchy

I just found out I'm allergic to corn. You know what has corn in it? EVERYTHING THAT TASTES GOOD! I am supposed to completely cut any corn or corn derivative food from my diet for 4 days and then eat lots on the 5th day. I haven't had a bite to eat yet today because literally everything has corn in it. It is making me very grouchy.
